HDD Types :
- Internal HDD
- External HDD
Internal HDD :
IDE – Integrated Drive Electronics –
- These are old types of HDD using a 40 pin data connector
- It is also called PATA – Parallel Advance Technology Attachment. 40 pin – Data and 4 pin Molex Power connector attached.
RPM – 5400, 7200
SATA – Serial ATA
- All recent hdd connected to SATA port.
- It provides high speed data connection.
- Speed depends on RPM - Rotation Per Minute
RPM -5400, 7200, 10000, 15000 Data read/write- Magnetism
There are 3 main SATA standards -
- SATA-1 1.5Gbps
- SATA-2 3.0Gbps
- SATA-3 6Gbps
For all SATA hard disk there will be common
Data Connector – 7 pins and Power Connector – 15 pins
SSD – Solid State Drive
- In SSD hard disk data is saved on flash memory ,Similar to USB Flash memory – EEPROM
- SSD HDD are small in size
- SSD requires very less power
- Speed is Higher, ten times faster than HDD
NVME Storage Device [Non Volatile Memory Express]
- NVMe [Non Volatile Memory Express]
NVMe
- It Required Special port to connect NVMe storage in the desktop
- It provides low latency performance and it is easy to connect
- Useful to run in Data centers, Healthcare, Machine Learning, AI and gaming, Video editing , graphics design, VFX
HDD vs SSD
- SSD is 10 times faster than HDD
- OS is stored in SSD and for the data we can use SATA HDD
- Data – SATA More space, reliable and Low cost.
- SSD is costlier compared to SATA hdd
Power devices:
SMPS [Switch Mode Power Supply]
A desktop SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) is a compact, highly efficient power supply used in PCs and other electronics to convert AC mains voltage to the various DC voltages required by computer components. Here’s an overview of its working principle and stages:
Typical Use in Desktop Computers
- Provides multiple DC outputs simultaneously (for motherboard, drives, graphics cards, etc.).
- Includes protective circuits for overcurrent, overvoltage, and short-circuit conditions
SMPS converts AC to DC as per requirement
- +- 12V DC- fans and motors, hdd, dvd drive , floppy drive
- +- 5V DC - used by electronic circuits - Motherboard
- +- 3.3V DC = RAM
- To get stable Power Supply - UPS is used
- Uninterruptible Power Supply- High, Low voltages , Spikes all are solved by this
