Network Components

2.Hub :

  • It is an older device; it broadcasts data to all connected devices.
  • Hub is a device which uses relay technique to transfer data.
  • It is less efficient compared to LAN Switch due to bandwidth sharing.
  • Lan hub supports speeds from 10Mbps and 100Mbps.

There are mainly two types of hub used :-

a. Passive Hub :

It has upto 4 ports and it doesn't require power input.

b. Active Hub :

  • An Active hub is a type of network device that not only connects multiple computers or network devices in a LAN (Local Area Network), but also amplifies or regenerates the signals Active hub amplifies signals before forwarding them.
  • Think of it as a signal booster with multiple ports—it ensures that data doesn't degrade as it travels across the network cables.
  • The hub is used in Star topology and uses UTP or STP cable which support maximum 100 meters signal transfer.
